Territorial Barking

Territorial barking is most commonly seen in the working and herding class breeds, such as Akitas, Rottweilers, German Shepherd Dogs, and Doberman Pinschers; however, it can occur with any breed. Territorial barking is a normal canine behavior and, in many instances, a desirable behavior for dog owners. The key is controlling the behavior. Here again, territorial barking is not the problem, it is the symptom.

It is generally easy to identify territorial barking. These types of dogs will usually not bark unless they are at home (i.e., their territory). Sometimes territorial barkers extend their territory to the surrounding neighborhood. These dogs will then bark at passersby and other dogs on the street where they are typically taken for walks.
